Android Nougat is on its way. As an Android user, we love major version updates. It always brings in more features and makes your phone more handy and efficient. So when will we see the update push to our phone? Let’s take a quick glance based on information we sourced over the Internet.
There is no doubt that Nexus will always be the 1st to receive the Nougat update. Google’s own phone line-up plays a critical role in the Google universe. Nexus 6P, 5X, 6, 9, and Pixel C tablet will let users enjoy the new features in Nougat as soon as possible. The next new Nexus, most likely OEM by HTC, will ship with Nougat loaded. Since the actual release date is not confirmed, we could even expect Android 7.1 loaded in the new Nexus.
Samsung is undoubtedly the biggest contributor in the smartphone market for Android. Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, Note 7 are among the most popular and wanted phones for Android lovers. Korea Times reported that Koh Dong-jin, president of Samsung Electronics’ mobile communications division, actually mentioned Nougat launch will be within 2-3 months for Note 7. However, it is unlikely for us in North America to receive the update this fast. Not only localization will consume quite some time, but also carrier approvals and associated policies will take a substantial amount of time. Don’t forget that Marshmallow was 8 months behind its original release on AT&T’s Note 5 and S6 Edge+.
LG is quite active in the market. Compared to the passive progress of Samsung, LG feels much more aggressive and swift. Indeed, the Android version loaded on LG contains very little add-ons and modifications from the original Android. Not surprisingly, LG already confirmed that the upcoming V20 will ship with Nougat loaded. LG V20 is expected to release very soon. As a result, we can almost say LG will be the 1st ever company to release Android Nougat. Moreover, V20 is featured on Google’s Android Nougat Page already. LG G5 users in Korea are able to enroll in beta test of the new version already. That means G5 will be among the 1st to receive actual OS update. LG tend to keep older generation phones in play in the past as well. As a result, we can expect Nougat available even for LG G4 or maybe G3 users.
As the rumored new Google Nexus maker, HTC will for sure be part of the 1st release. Unlocked HTC 10 will receive the update in the 4th quarter, followed by carrier HTC 10 and HTC One A9. HTC usually communicate well with Google. Their flagship phones are likely to be among the 1st to receive the updates too.
There is some uncertainty in Motorola recently. Although Moto Z is quite a great phone, we do not feel any confidence on the software part. The company did not even keep monthly security updates lately. Motorola is also making Verizon exclusive models, which I think will take them quite some time. As a result, it is unlikely that we can see Moto phones get the update very fast.
SONY mentioned the Nougat plans in a blog post. Timeframe is not provided, but models that will receive the update are listed: Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia X, Xperia XA, Xperia XA Ultra and Xperia X Performance. SONY’s Android version overall is quite clean, so we could expect to see this update ahead of some other companies.
ZTE, Huawei, and other Chinese Android Phone Maker
So far ZTE is the only one to confirm Axon 7 NA version along with other models will embrace Nougat. Other than that we do not have much information to explore. Most Chinese phone makers will modify their version heavily so it is unlikely to see Nougat update that fast. Huawei is probably the only company we can expect a new flagship loaded with Nougat. However, there is not enough information yet.
